CHRISTINE FRANCES MAJOR was born March 6, 1921 in Caldwell Texas to Wesley and Ada Major. She has departed from this life on Wednesday May 3, 2017. After fighting off two life ending conditions over the course of two years, Christine decided it was time to move on.
Christine, her parents and 3 of what would later be 10 siblings had to leave Caldwell abruptly in 1922. At just a year old the family landed just north of Fredrick, Oklahoma where she attended elementary school off and on while she and her two older sisters cleaned homes and worked in the cotton fields with their brother Herbert.
After several years the family began their migration to California which included a short stay in Kansas then back to Oklahoma working as Share Tenants before finally arrived in Long Beach in 1940. Now with 10 siblings housing was difficult. It was very long before the family moved to Manteca, California where they were awarded land by the government through the Homestead Act. Soon after they settled in, Christine and Sister Haddie moved to Modesto, California to find "city" work. Early on, they found work, once again, cleaning homes while being socialites in the evening.
In the early 1960s, Christine landed a job as the cook's helper in small elementary school that is now part of the Modesto City School District. Christine work there for 25 years before retiring in the 80s. She was also a custodian for 3 doctor's clinics in the evening for around 18 years. Having given herself to the lord a very early age, Christine and Haddie and few others founded Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Modesto which is still going strong. Christine was married twice but never had any children. She did however, open up her home to many of her nieces and nephews during the 50+ years that she was a homeowner both on Pine Street and of course 330 Colorado St.
Christine is survived by all 900+ family members on her Uncle Julious, Uncle George, Aunt Lizzie and Aunt Sallie's side of the family.
